READING EFFICIENCY AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 10 LEARNERS

This study aimed to investigate on the reading efficiency and academic performance to address the poor achievement rate of students in the National Achievement Test (NAT). Grade 10 students in one of the secondary schools in Northern Negros for the school year 2019-2020 were the respondents of the study and were selected through stratified random sampling. A modified reading Rate Comprehension Test result and the learners’ Progress Report Card (Form 138) were used to determine the relationship between reading efficiency and academic performance. One-way Anova and t-test were used to determine the significant difference between reading efficiency level and academic performance and Pearson r Correlation was used to determine the significant relationship between reading efficiency level and academic performance of the students. Partial correlation and independent t- test were used as specific statistical techniques. A significant difference was noted in the reading efficiency of the students when grouped and compared according to type of reading materials read and average family monthly income but not significant when grouped according to sex. Statistics results of the investigation on academic performance of the students disclosed a significant correlation between reading efficiency and academic performance. The findings confirmed that reading efficiency influenced significantly the academic performance and therefore, an enhancement program must be formulated.
