RETHINKING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN THE TIME OF CRISIS

The idea of inclusivity in education has become an abstract phenomenon in the time of the pandemic crisis. While studies show that most advanced countries are adaptive to the so-called new normal, the other side of the world is struggling to adapt to emergency remote education due to the notion of the digital divide. The disparity of society’s access to the digital world has been present even in the pre-pandemic era. However, it has predominantly visible in today’s dystopian society as it continuously navigates in the pandemic world. This paper attempts to discuss and to share a glimpse of the digital situation during the pandemic crisis. Interestingly, it presents that the digital divide widens learning spaces and significantly creates social injustices. Hence, it is highly recommended in the post-pandemic world for countries to invest in digital infrastructures, provide affordable and accessible supportive digital learning tools, resources and materials, and strengthen and expand digital literacy programs for all.
